Need of Atal tunnel Rohtang –

There are two routes to Ladakh , one is Leh-Manali Highway through Rohtang pass , due to the heavy snowfall in winter this route got blocked and open for four months in a year for  road traffic  and the other one route is Srinagar- Drass-Kargil-Leh Highway through Zoji La pass which also remain blocked  for four months a year due to heavy snowfall in winter month.

And these two routes are most important for Indian Army, because through these routes the military supplies are feed to the sub-sectors in the west facing Siachen Glacier and Aksai Chin.

And due to these blocked routes, it become difficult to provide the food and other essential thing supply to our Solders. So, to solve this problem it was decided to build a tunnel to connect Leh to Manali. A 14Km long tunnel was planned to be built under Zoji la Pass but later on this plan was closed and then the plan of Rohtang Tunnel project was proposed.

So, this is the reason of the need of this tunnel.
