There are a lot of glaciers in Himachal Pradesh. Total number of glaciers are 2500. Himachal Pradesh the Glacier is called ‘Shigri’ in local language. The glacier is also known as Himnad. Glaciers provide water to rivers and are the major source of rivers.

(i) Glacier of Chandra Valley (Lahaul – Spiti)

Bara Shigri –

This is the largest glacier in Himachal Pradesh, which is located in Lahaul – Spiti. The length of this glacier is 25 km and Chandra river receives water from this Glaciers. Chandra Tal Lake is formed by this glacier.

Gefang Glacier –

It is named after the God Gefang of Lahaul. Gefang mountain peak is called ‘Manimahesh of Lahaul’. Its shape is similar to the ‘Matter Horn’ of Switzerland.

Chandra Glacier –

This glacier is the source of origin of Chandra River and Chandra Tal Lake. It can be reached via Koksar here. This glacier is formed by separating from the bara Shigri.

Kulti Glacier –

This glacier located near Koksar looks after crossing Rohtang. Apart from this, Chhota Shigri, Pacha, Shpting, Samundri, Bolunag, Tapn, Dingkarmo, Shili glacier are also located in the Lahaul region of Chandra valley.

Bhaga Glacier –

This glacier provides water to Bhaga River. This glacier, located in the Bhaga Valley of Lahaul, can be reached via ‘Koksar’ and ‘Tandi’.

Lady of Keylong glacier –

The glacier can be seen from Keylong. This Glacier is located at an altitude of 6061 meters. It was named 100 years ago by the British lady ‘Lady Elashainghday’. Its shape looks like a woman when the snow melts.

Mukkila Glacier –

This glacier is located in Bhaga valley at an altitude of 6478 meters, which provides water to the Bhaga River. Apart from this, Milang is the major glacier of the Gangstang Bhaga Valley.

(iii) Glacier of Patan Valley (Lahaul) 


Sonapani Glacier – 

Valkar and Pascoe surveyed it for the first time in 1906 and Curin and Munshi of the Geological Survey of India in 1957 for the second time. It is located near the Kulti drain.

Perad Glacier –

It can be reached from Putiruni here. There is a beautiful cave here. Perad means ‘broken rock’ in the local language.

Miyar Glacier –

This glacier located in Lahaul valley, supplies water to Miyar water stream. Apart from this, Shilpa, Kukti, Neelkanth and Langar Dhoksa are the major glaciers of the Patan valley.


(iv) Glaciers of Kullu district


Dudhon Glacier –

Dudhon Glacier is 15 km long and situated in Kullu district. Parvati river gets water from this glacier.

Parvati Glacier –

Parvati River gets water from Parvati Glacier. It is also 15 km long.

Beas Kund Glacier –

This glacier provides water to the Beas River. This glacier is located near Rohtang Pass.


(v) Bhadal Glacier –


This glacier is situated on the slopes of the Pir Panjal mountain ranges in the Bara Bhangal region of Kangra. This gives water to the Bhadal River (a tributary of Ravi).


(vi) Chandranahan Glacier –


This glacier is located on the Chanshal peak of Rohru in Shimla district, which gives water to the Pabbar River.

This glacier located in Kinnaur district provides water to Gara Khad (tributary of Sutlej).
