About HPPSC

Hey there! Did you know that Himachal Pradesh attained statehood on 25th January 1971? Before that, the Union Public Service Commission used to handle the function of the Public Service Commission for the civil services and posts related to the affairs of the Union Territory of Himachal Pradesh under Article 315 of the Constitution of India. However, after statehood was achieved, it became necessary for the State to have its own Public Service Commission.

But did you know that a State Public Service Commission can only be constituted simultaneously with the attainment of Statehood? So, to fill this gap, the Union Public Service Commission, on a request from the Governor of Himachal Pradesh and with the approval of the President of India, agreed to serve the needs of Himachal Pradesh till the establishment of a Public Service Commission for the State or for a period of three months from 25th January 1971, whichever was earlier.

Finally, on 8th April 1971, the Governor of Himachal Pradesh notified the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (Members) Regulations, 1971, under Article 318 of the Constitution of India. These regulations stated that the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission would consist of a Chairman and two Members to be appointed by the Governor. And thus, the first composition of the Commission was established.
