Solan is a district of state Himachal Pradesh in India and solan town is the Headquarter of Solan District. In Himachal Pradesh it is the largest Municipal Council. It is basically south to the Shimla (Capital of Himachal Pradesh) and it is 45.5 kilometers away from Shimla. It is located at an average elevation of 1550 meters i.e. approximately equal to 5090 ft. Solan was named after Goddess Shoolini Mata whose temple is in Solan. The Shoolini fair is held every year in June (in Solan). This fair is tribute to Shoolini Mata and in this fair there is 3-day mela in Thodo ground. Solan was capital of Baghat Which we will discuss in history part briefly.

This city is very famous all over the India for its vast Mushroom Farming and known as “Mushroom City of India”. There is also a Research Centre named (DMR)Directorate of Mushroom research located at Chamba Ghat.

In Solan there is a bulk production of Tomatoes and due to this solan is also called as the “City of Red Gold”. The Interesting thing is that this solan town is situated in between Shimla and Chandigarh, on Shimla- Kalka National Highway -22. And as we all know about toy train (Kalka-Shimla railway) is passes through this beautiful town. This beautiful city is located at the lower range of Great Himalayas.

Solan is very good for travelling. This district consists of many temples and monasteries. One more thing is that this district has one of the oldest breweries (शराब की भठ्ठी) in country. There is one bonus interesting fact for you friends this fact is that in solan has an old fort which is about 300- year old and is located at the top of hill, this fort gets damaged but this fort provides an amazing broad scenic view of country side. Geography –

Geographical location –

Solan District Located in the southwestern part of the Himachal Pradesh.  It lies between 30° 05 ‘ to 31° 15’ north latitude and 76° 42 ‘to 77° 20’ east longitude.  Solan district bordered Shimla in the east, Punjab in the west, Bilaspur and Mandi in the north and Sirmaur and Haryana in the south.

Valleys –

 Saproon Valley is located in Solan Tehsil of Solan District, Doon Valley in Nalagarh Tehsil and Kunihar Valley in Arki Tehsil.  The Doon Valley is the most fertile valley in the district. 

Rivers –

In the Solan district, there is Asni, a tributary of the Yamuna, Gambhar, Dabaar, Kuthar and Kiyar, tributaries of the Satluj.  Kausal is a tributary of Ghaghdar.  Sirsa river is in Nalagarh subdivision.

History –

Solan district is a part of the princely states of Shimla hill including Baghal-120 sq mi, Mahalog 49 sq mi, Baghat-33 sq mi, Kuthad-21 sq mi, Mangal-14 sq mi, Kunihar-7 sq mi and Includes Baija-5 square miles.  On April 15, 1948, including these 7 hill states Solan and Arki tehsils were formed in the Tehsils of Mahasu district.  Apart from these 7 hill states, Hundur (Nalagarh) -276 square mile principality was established in 1966 AD In H.P (as a Tehsil of Shimla) and merged in solan district in 1972 AD. All the 7 princely states except Hundur princely state used to pay annual rent to Bilaspur princely state till 1790 AD. Mangal princely state even after 1790 AD, the annual rent to Bilaspur state.

(1) Baghat State –

Solan city and Kasauli were part of Baghat principality. Baghat means ‘Bahu Ghat’ meaning ‘many dares / Ghats.

 Establishment –

The establishment of the princely state of Baghat was done by Pawar Rajput ‘Bashant Pal’ (Harichand Pal) from Dharna Geri (South India).  Rana Inderpal named the princely state Baghat. In 1790 AD princely state Baghat became independent from Bilaspur.  Rana Mahendra Singh became the first independent ruler of the princely state of Baghat. 

British –

In 1839 AD Mana Mahendra Singh’s died without any child, princely state of Baghat came under the control of the British Government. 

 Rana Vijay Singh became the ruler of Baghat after Rana Mahendra Singh in 1849 AD.  After the death of Vijay Singh in (without any son), Baghat princely state came under the policy of Lord Dalhousie under Laps policy. In 1862 AD Rana Ummed Singh (13 years later) received the throne when he was on death bed, after Umaid Singh, Rana Dalip Singh (1862–1911 AD) ascended the throne.  He shifted Solan from Bauch, the capital of the princely state of Baghat.


(2) Baghal princely state (Arki) –



Mangal was situated in the north of the Baghal state, Dhami and Kunihar in the east, Hundur (Nalagarh) in the west and Ambala in the south. 

Establishment –

 The princely state of Baghal was established by Pawar Rajput Ajaydev of Ujjain.  The state of Baghal, located around the river Gambhar, the capital of the Baghal principality was Sari, Dandan, Dugali and Darla.

Rana Sabha Chand –

Rana Sabha Chand in 1643 AD Made Arki the capital of the princely state of Baghal.  He is considered the first ruler of the princely state of Baghal.  The city of Arki was founded by Rana Sabha Chand.

Gorkha invasion –

Gurkha attack took place during the kingdom of Rana Jagat Singh (1778 AD – 1828 AD).  Baghal Principality from 1803 AD to 1815 AD was under control of the Gorkhas.  Arki was the headquarters of the Gorkhas.  Rana Jagat Singh took refuge in the princely state of Nalagarh for 7 years.  In 1815 AD by the British Government Removed the control of Gorkha from the princely state of Baghal.  Anirudh Chand, son of Sansar Chand, took refuge with the son of Rana Jagat Singh in fear of Sikh war. 

British Government –

In 1857 AD Rana Kishan Singh (1840–1876 AD) assisted the British in the revolt of 1857. By the British Kishan Singh was given the title of ‘Raja’ 1860 AD.   The extreme ruler of the princely state of Baghal was Rajendra Singh.  The modern name of Jagatgarh fort of Baghal state is ‘Jatog’ (Shimla). 



(3) Kunihar princely state –

Abhoj Dev, who came from Jammu (Akhnoor) founded Kunihar princely state in 1154 AD. The capital of the princely state of Kunihar was Haatkoti.  Magan Dev was the ruler of the princely state at the time of the war.  After the Gorkhas left Thakur Mungri Das became the ruler of the princely state.  Rao Hardev Singh was the last ruler of Kunihar.

Economy –

 Industrial estates were established in Solan in 1961-62, Barotiwala in 1964-65 and Parwanoo in 1975.  HPMC has a processing unit at Parwanoo.  There are dolomite deposits in Nalagarh, gypsum in Kuthar and lime stone (limestone) in Darlaghat.  Mohan Micking Brewery’s 1855 AD Established in Solan.  Baddi H.P.  Is the largest industrial city of India.  Solan is also known as Khumbh Nagari (Mushroom City).  There is a National Mushroom Research Institute here. In Darlaghat there is a cement factory named Ambuja

Formation of district-

In 15, April 1948   Baghat, Baghal, Kunihar, Mahalog, Kuthad, Baija and Maangal princely states (as Solan and Arki tehsils) were part of Mahasu district while Nalagarh princely state was part of Pepsu (Union of Patiala and East Punjab).  Nalagarh was the tehsil of Ambala district.  Nalagarh and Kandaghat as part of Shimla district on November 1, 1966 merged In H.P. In September 1, 1972 AD, including Nalagarh, Kandaghat, Arki, Solan.  Was formed the Solan district. 

Miscellaneous –

Salman Rushdie’s house in Anis Villa of Solan.  In Solan there is Y. S. Parmar horticultural and forestry university in Nauni. Y.S. Parmar university was founded in 1985. There is Lawrence School at Snawar in Kasauli, which was established in 1847 AD by Sir Henry Lawrence.  There is a Women’s Polytechnic Institute in Kandaghat.  There is a Navodaya School in Kunihar.  Chail was the summer capital of Maharaja Patiyali Bhupinder Singh.  It has the world’s highest cricket ground Chail, military school and forest-training school.  There is a CRI (Central Research Institute) in Kasauli where a vaccine for the bites of mad dogs is made.  Dagshai (Maharaja was the fief of Patiala) and at Sabathu there is the army cantonment. 

Solan was named after Shoolini Mata whose temple is in Solan.  The Shoolini fair is held every year in June (in Solan).  There are wildlife sanctuaries in Darlaghat, Mazathal, Chail and Shilli.
